A minister arrives at a run-down mining town to take over the church there. He finds he has his work cut out for him, especially when an earthquake causes a flood in the mineshaft and traps some of the local children.

The girl is a school teacher in a cattle town, the hero a rather wild cowboy of good intentions but addicted to gambling. The girl saves him from a false accusation of robbery and this awakens his better instincts.
On his way to file a claim, a lone prospector stops overnight with a settler and his family. The miner little suspects that his host plots to steal the gold. But the settler’s daughter overhears the plan and warns the visitor just in time. The couple escapes with the woman’s younger sister. In store-bought finery suggesting new wealth, they return to the scene of the attempted crime and make peace with the settler. “We’ll work the mine together,” promises the prospector.
Crooked Bluff Hardcastle is appointed by the court to take care of the business affairs of pretty young Helen Saunders' ranch, which is about to go out of business, but Hardcastle is secretly planning to swindle her out of the ranch. He is thwarted by cowboy Jim Donovan and his friend, banker George Masters, who buy Helen's ranch at auction. Angered, Hardecastle sends his hired thugs to get rid of Donovan and Masters so he can get his hands on the ranch.

Johnson, a pharmacist, makes an illicit traffic in cocaine and morphine, which he cleverly sells through his drug counter to a select clientele. In his richly furnished office, the head of the Kurson Chemical Company counts the receipts of Kurson Consumption Cure, a patented drug that contains a large amount of morphine.
